Tips on Kaleidoscope Construction

Block 3 Note - Note - Note ---- Not all of your pieces are cut as squares.  You will be cutting 2 7/8" x 3" rectangles.  Placement is easy to follow, but they must be cut as a rectangle, not a square.  Read cutting instructions carefully.

Again you will be making half square triangles.  Remember how to trim?

You will need to begin thinking of your backing fabric.  We have a beautiful blue backing fabric (108" wide) in the Jewel Tone Splash that you might like (3 yards).  We used it on our Shop sample.

Black or another fabric of your choice can be purchased in 42" widths and pieced for the backing (9 yards).

We will be offering a discount on your backing purchase.

Block 2 Half square triangles for this block are stitched and then you are to trim them to a uniform   2 1/4" inches.   You will need a quilter's ruler to do this.  If you need instructions on how to measure for trimming, we will be glad to help you.

Star points.  Be sure not to trim off your star points as you square up your blocks.  If you are not sure at this point we can help you.

Good pressing can make a real difference in your finished block.

Block 1 Read General Notes below and instructions in your beginner kit.

In cutting background fabric, you have 5 1/2 yards of the 8 1/2 yard total.  You do not have the 3 yards that you are told to cut for Month 12.

Call the shop or visit us if you need to know how to "pinwheel" your center.

We have a large acrylic square that you can use to "square up" this block.

General notes on quilt construction:

Read all instruction sheets before beginning this project and follow.

Note that a "scant" 1/4 inch seam is used.  There are instructions included for testing your seams.  If you have any questions, we will be happy to help.

The instructions give you pretty explicit instructions on measurement, squaring up, and pressing.  If followed, your project should proceed smoothly.

You will be receiving all of your background fabric in the Starter kit.  We found the suggested yardage adequate for making this quilt.  Use thought in cutting, however, to insure that you have the fabric you need.
